World’s First 100% Recyclable Microwaveable Rice Pouch Launched by FEI Foods
South Wales-based company FEI Foods, together with the help of JM Packaging, has launched the world’s first 100% recyclable microwaveable pouch. FEI Foods is a major processor of ready-to-eat (RTE) rice and grain pouches in Europe while JM Packaging is a major supplier of custom-made packaging in the UK food industry.
According to FEI Foods, the new packaging is a recycle-ready and retort-ready mono-material polypropylene (PP) flexible pack that retains all mechanical properties of a conventional stand-up pouch. Both FEI and JMP have been working on the project since early 2019.
Managing Director of FEI Foods Simon Lewis stated, “Quality and innovation are at the forefront of our DNA at FEI Foods. As a market leader in this category in Europe, it was imperative that we led the way in developing a recycle-ready pouch. We are determined to provide the most sustainable product possible, and the development of this pouch has been a key strategic objective for us for some years. 24 months of diligent testing of this new material has culminated in this launch.”
From a press release by JM Packaging, the company noted that “This launch will be the global first in the industry to provide consumers and food manufacturers with a product that can be retorted, ready-to-heat, and recyclable where recycling framework permits.”
FMCG giant Mars Food, in partnership with packaging company Amcor, has also announced earlier that they aim to launch recyclable microwaveable pouches however, the company has yet to begin its rollout.
The pouch size, shape, and function of FEI Foods’ products remain the same as its previously existing packs. The design also continues to adhere to the consumers’ requirement and requests of food-safety, ease of use, and convenience while establishing groundbreaking environmental benefits.
The new FEI Foods recyclable microwaveable pouches are now available for purchase in major UK and European supermarkets.
