Are Sirloin Strips Tender?

The beef-top sirloin steak cut into thin strips can be almost as tender as a filet mignon, making it an excellent choice of meat for different recipes.

What’s the Best Way to Cook a Sirloin Steak to Make It Tender?

The best way to tenderize a sirloin steak is to give it a good sear on a skillet or grill. Searing steaks after tenderizing using another method, such as a mallet, also works well.

Sear the beef for 6 minutes per side on a grill or in a cast iron skillet over high heat (400 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit). It produces ultra-tender steaks while sealing in the flavors. Cook yours until done to your liking.

How to Cook Sirloin Strips in the Oven

To cook in the oven, preheat the oven to 400°F. Season steaks with salt and pepper. In a skillet, heat two teaspoons olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat until almost smoking. Sear steaks for 1 minute on each side. Roast for 6-8 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Modify the cooking time if your meat is larger or smaller or if you prefer it more or less done.

Sirloin Strips Over Rice Ingredients

  • 1 to ½  pounds beef top sirloin steak, cut into thin strips
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼  teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • ½  cup reduced-sodium beef broth
  • ⅓  cup dry red wine or additional reduced-sodium beef broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • ½  teaspoon dried basil
  • ½  teaspoon dried thyme
  • 3 cups hot cooked brown rice

Directions

  1. Sprinkle beef strips with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large skillet, brown beef in 1 teaspoon oil. Remove the beef strips and keep warm.
  3. In the same skillet, saute onions in the remaining oil until tender.
  4. Add garlic and cook 1 minute longer. Stir in the diced tomatoes, reduced-sodium beef broth, wine, bay leaf, basil, and thyme.
  5. Bring the beef broth to a boil alongside the other ingredients.
  6. Reduce heat. You will now simmer, uncovered, for 5 to 10 minutes or until desired consistency.
  7. Return the beef to the pan and stir for 2-4 minutes or until tender.
  8. Discard bay leaf before serving the beef mixture with a bowl of cooked brown rice. If preferred, sprinkle with parmesan and crushed red peppers.

Is It Possible to Freeze Sirloin Strips Over Rice?

Yes, it is possible. Suppose you want to freeze the cooled beef mixture, store it in freezer bags. Before consuming, partially thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally and adding a little broth or water as needed.

Recipe Tips

  • If you have time to prepare, partially freeze the meat for around 30 minutes for easier slicing.
  • You can add red peppers and seasonings like cayenne and Worcestershire sauce to make the flavor richer and saucier.
  • You can substitute the brown rice with a rice mixture. Use two frozen wild and brown rice packages mixed with corn, carrots, and peas, and prepare the rice according to the package directions.
