“Half-Rice Bill” Proposed in the Philippines

The Department of Agriculture in the Philippines plans to revive the proposal for a “half-rice” bill to encourage restaurants to offer smaller rice portions to lessen food waste.

According to data from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), 255,000 metric tons of rice are wasted yearly. This volume could feel around 2.79 million Filipinos for an entire year.

The initiative aims to make half-rice servings available in all food establishments nationwide. PhilRice supports the movement.

Recently, House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin of Iloilo filed House Bill 9536, also known as the Rice Waste Reduction Act of 2023. The bill seeks to institutionalize the practice of offering half rice to consumers, reducing wastage while addressing hunger and food insecurity.
