Rice Reserve to be Released by South Korea Due to Output Shortage

Share

South Korea has stated that it is planning to release about 100,000 tons of reserved rice in the upcoming month. The output of rice grain in the country had dwindled down due to last year’s long rainy season coupled with major typhoons.

In the first two months of 2021, the country already released 170,000 tons of reserved rice into the market. South Korea plans on releasing a new batch in April. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, the new batch of rice had been harvested in 2019.

The move is in accordance with the government’s 2021 plan of releasing up to 370,000 tons of reserved rice into the market.

Last year, the combined production of rice resulted only into 3.51 million tons, which is 120,000 tons short of the country’s annual goal of 3.63 million tons. This is due to the record-long rainy season that lasted for 54 days, along with the powerful typhoons Maysak and Haishen that hit the country.
